Che Kung was a general in Sung Dynasty. He was a great soldier and was said to have protected the last emperor of Sung dynasty to Hong Kong before he died. Some people said that they were settled in Ho Chung Village in Sai Kung. So after he died, people respect his courage and contribution and built a temple to worship him. There is another story about him saving the people in Shatin and therefore there is also a Che Kung Temple in Shatin between Tai Wai and Che Kung MTR stations and is much busier than the one in Sai Kung.
Che Kung’s birthday is on day 2 of Chinese New Year. Every year, thousands of people go to the Che Kung Temple in Shatin to worship him. Mostly because there is a Wheel of Fortune in the temple. It is said that if you turn the wheel three times, it will bring you good fortune. Many people would like to improve their luck starting with the beginning of the year, especially when the temple is close to the Shatin Horse Racecourse, many gamblers would come to worship and hope for good fortune. It’s prominent enough that it was reported on the tv news every year.
