Dim Sum Restaurants are typically big so if you walk pass a small one on the street it's quite likely that it's a local cafe only.
Famous ones are the City Hall Restaurant in Central City Hall, Luk Yu in Central but it's really difficult to get a table. There is also one in Cultural Centre. Of course, there are many many other dim sum restaurants but depends on the district the waiters may not speak much English. The ones in touristy area are safer.
After you've got a table, you are expected to order tea. Most common ones are Jasmine (Heung Pin), Pu-ri and Sout Mei. Some people order more than one kind of tea and some ask for a pot of water in case the tea is too strong.
There are two ways to order dim sum, depends on individual restaurant. Most common way is to wait for various dim-sum carts go pass and you stop them and choose. Some restaurants, however, do what they call "order, then steam". They give you a piece of paper with names of dim sum and you mark how many dim sum you want, then the kitchen will prepare your dim sum. Some restaurants do a mix of these 2 methods.
The most popular dim sums include: bbq pork bun (char siu bao), shrimp dumpling (har gout), spring rolls. Have an egg tarts or custard bun as dessert. |
