Hong Kong 2009 Festival Calendar

Festival Date in 2009 Notes
The first day of January 1 Jan Thursday (so you can bet lots of people take Friday off to have a long weekend!)
Chinese New Year of the Ox 26 Jan Mon
The second day of the Chinese Lunar New Year 27 Jan Tue
The third day of the Lunar New Year 28 Jan Wed
Spring Lantern Festival / Yuen Siu 9 Feb Mon - not a public holiday
Ching Ming Festival 4 Apr Sat - a public holiday but most people wouldn't be working anyway so a "wasted holiday"
Good Friday 10 Apr Fri
The day following Good Friday 11 Apr Sat
Easter Monday 13 Apr Mon
Birthday of Tin Hau 18 Apr Sat - not a public holiday
May day 1 May Fri
Buddha’s Birthday and Cheung Chau Bun Festival 2 May Sat - see note for 4 Apr!
Tuen Ng /  Dragon Boat Festival 28 May Thur
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day 1 July Wed
Kwan Tai / Kwan Gon's Birthday 14 Aug Fri - not a public holiday
Seventh Goddess' Day / Tsat-je 26 Aug Wed - not a public holiday
Chinese Ghosts Festival / Yue Lan 2 Sep Wed - not a public holiday
Confucius' Birthday/Teacher's Day 28 Sept Mon - not a public holiday
Chinese National Day 1 Oct Thu
Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival / Moon Festival 3 Oct Sat -- this year is a little strange.  Normally the public holiday is the day after the night when lanterns are shown (so we can all sleep in).  But in this year that would be Sunday, a day of rest anyway, so for 2009 actual day/evening which is the Lantern Festival is a pubic holiday.
Chung Yeung Festival 26 Oct Monday
Winter Solstice 22 Dec Thu - not a public holiday
Christmas Day 25 Dec Friday
Boxing Day 26 Dec Sat

Notes: Gazetted holidays, e.g. the official public holidays decided by the Government of Hong Kong, have been checked with the official list. The Chinese Festivals which depend on the Lunar Calendar can also be calculated in advance which I have done here where possible.
