Hi

My husband and I are planning to stop over in Hong Kong on our way to New Zealand next February 2010.

Our dates mean that we will arrive in Hong Kong on Monday February 15th (the day after Chinese New Year) and leave on Friday February 19th.

Will most shops and restaurants be closed on the Monday and Tuesday? Or will there still be a lot to see and do on those first two days, not to mention different places to eat?

I presume horse-racing will still happen on the Wednesday evening at Happy Valley?

Many thanks for any help.

Claudette

These days not much is different shopping wise -- all the big stores are open during the holiday. Only family and small business close and even then probably only for the first day.

Hello
Granted this is no longer terribly accurate info as I have not been back in a long time, but these are known hot spots:

One of the more happening places to be during NYE in Hong Kong is up the street from Central, Lan Kwai Fong and has always been since the 90s. Tons of hipster clubs, bars, and where all the European/UK expats hang out on weekends. I'm sure there are tons of hot new restaurants as well. You'll pay a pretty penny for a bottled beer due to Central Business District Real Estate, and it will be elbow to elbow people, but the atmosphere doesn't get more fun that that.

Or if you prefer a romantic night time scenery view, there is a pier walkway near New World hotel complex Tsim Sa Tsui that is the best spot for viewing city lights. If anything the view for fireworks will be right there.

You may want to consider Bo Innovation for some really high end Cantonese/European western fusion, make a reservation.
You can probably walk to Lan Kwai Fong from there.
