Can you tell me where I can find the details of the investment portfolio held by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority? I presume this should be public information but I have searched and I can't find it anywhere. Please help. Thanks.

Surely that would be confidential information? I mean the exact details of what they have invested in.

I understand that the HKMA has the "Investment Portfolio" and also a "Backing Portfolio". And it is the Backing one, does that mean "backup" is mostly US government securities. Therefore it isn't really much of a backing for Hong Kong!

The "Investment Portfolio" is where Hong Kong's real money is stored, and is one of the largest in the world. Unlike most modern developed countries Hong Kong is not in debt! It has a surplus of billions of dollars.

A report in March 2010, which is the latest I can find, said it was almost $140 billion, and that's US dollars. That made it bigger than the 9 other biggest country funds in the world. That information comes from the report of the "Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute".

As I said I presume details are confidential but it has been stated that the internal fund managers of the HKMA have a target to keep at least the Exchange Fund, which is the part used to control the dollar value set at three quarters in 75% bonds and 25% in stocks and equities.

Exactly what equities though, that would be anybodies guess.
