Sounds like I'll be eating bamboo! But the office tells me I'm to stay in the Panda Hotel, it looks ok online but then so does everything. What's it really like? Is it close to pubs and restaurants so I won't have to travel hours back to the hotel after dinner?

Well you won't be in the wild bamboo forests at the Panda Hotel, it's in the middle of the city. Not the central business district exactly though, rather far out in what used to be an industrial area but is now quite developed.

While hardly a glamorous part of the city you'll find plenty to eat and shopping to do, whether it be small roadside cafes or big shopping malls.

It is a mixed commercial, light industrial and residential district. Quite typical of Hong Kong so you'll certainly be seeing real Hong Kong life if you say there on business and venture out in the evenings after work.

Just across the road from the hotel there is a side street, Tsuen Lok Street, with builders supplies like bags of cement and wooden boards. Just down the road is a catholic church, though you might not recognise the very modern building, and nearby are some schools and one of the major regional hospitals.

Not however, a lot in the way of typical "tourist" destinations; no touristy street markets, historic buildings or such.

By chance there are two interesting museums nearby though, the
Sam Tung Uk Museum and the Herbal Tea Museum.

So all in all not a bad area, but hardly tourist-central either.

I presume you are being put up there as it is convenient to your Hong Kong office? That's the way it normally works isn't it. Maybe you can ask to be put more into the tourist area of Nathan Road in TST, it isn't far to go particularly with the MTR train.
