Labour day, the 1st of May, is a "Public" or gazetted holiday in Hong Kong.

That means that banks, government offices and the majority of commercial offices will be closed. You won't be able to use a post office, get a visa, or hold a business meeting.

But life goes on in Hong Kong and you won't find any difficulty going shopping, either in private shops, in small or large shopping arcades. Similarly restaurants big and small will still operate on the first day of May.

This year the holiday is on a Thursday so it is mid week end is just a "day off" for most working people. Therefore the shopping streets in Mongkok, Causeway Bay and TST may be a little more crowded than normal though as the next day is a working day people won't stay out especially late.
