Will the shops all be closed during Chinese New Year in Hong Kong? I will be visiting in 2014 and want to know if I should expect all the shops and businesses to be closed. Is it a bad time to visit?

Not at all! In fact the Luna New Year period is a great time to visit Hong Kong as the city is full of festive atmosphere.

Yes it is true that some companies close, and of course the actual first 3 days of the new year are public holidays, but ordinary shops and restaurants in the city are open.

In outlying areas, more residential or rural parts of the region such as the New Territories and Outlying Island you'll find more businesses closed, and for longer. And in some industries such as construction and printing and weaving the closures are longer.

But for the most part the city continues to happily go on with it's business!

What you will find though is an even larger than normal influx of tourists from other parts of China, and these may mean that tourist attractions such as Ocean Park and Disneyland may be busier with longer lines.

Hotels also tend to book up during the CNY period.

I hope that helps.
