Weather in Hong Kong: January

If you are visiting Hong Kong in January you will find the weather to be generally very cool, but it is somewhat luck whether or not it will be clear and bright.  On a sunny day it may go up to 20C (68F), more likely to be around 16C (61F) but during the middle of the night drop to 10C (50F).  There will be big differences between day and night and you’ll need a jacket.

Most years January has weather that is good for going out, it is a continuation of the good autumn and winter weather, but in some years it gets cloudy and there is some rain; though rarely heavy.  Average rainfall in January is about 24mm and it's not typhoon season.

Days of bright sunshine are common though sadly the sky is rarely solid blue these days.  That’s more about air pollution than the mist or fog.  You may get lucky though with a clear windy day when it blows the filth away!

Towards the end of the month we sometimes have the Lunar New Year, depending upon the Lunar Calendar as most years it falls in February.  Read my page on February weather in Hong Kong to read about the weather during the Chinese New Year.

Do you know: Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January. Check out the calendar of this year to find out.
