Home > Sightseeing > Districts > Hong Kong Island > Hollywood Road Hollywood RoadHollywood Road ( Chinese : 荷李活道 ), is a major road going from Hong Kong's Central district through to the western area known as Sheung Wan. One of the first roads constructed in the old historic Hong Kong it is not connected at all with the US Hollywood of movie fame, but is rather named after the holly trees that at one time grew in the area. As early as 1841 right at the beginning of the colonial period construction began in Victoria Peak at the foot of the Hollywood Road. At the time it was just up the hill from the beach but due to the many years of Central reclamation it is now a long way from the waterfront. Originally a lower class residential area it has had a mixed fortune but is now a mix of local residential and small business. As a tourist destination it offers a range of interesting sites in a short walking distance. As well as some real glimpses of local life particularly along the less fashionable western end of the street you will also find a large collection of antique shops in the area above Central. Connecting Central and Mid-levels is the Central to Mid-Levels escalator system , also via Hollywood Road. Ring on one end of Hollywood Road near the famous temple stairs Street Hollywood Road Man Mo Temple is located. Nearby Cat Street , it is well-known antiques and nostalgia items concentrated. |
