Outlying Islands - Lantau, Cheung Chau, Peng Chau and Lamma

There are several inhabited outlying islands in Hong Kong:

  • Lantau - where you can find the big outdoor Buddha statue and temple
  • Cheung Chau - an old fishing village and there are still fishermen around.  Also famous for the sea food and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival
  • Peng Chau - a much smaller village
  • Lamma - sea food and pubs.
  • Discovery Bay - purely modern residential area for middle class Chinese and well off expatriates

Island Hopping Pass - Ticket-holders can enjoy unlimited rides on ordinary class of ordinary ferry (which takes about 55 minutes from Central to Lantau or Cheung Chau while fast ferry only takes 35 minutes)  in a day of their choice to Lantau Island, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau. (A surcharge is required for upgrading to deluxe class or fast ferries, or to ride on Sundays and Public Holidays). Island Hopping Pass includes shopping and dining coupons of value plus a Hong Kong Outlying Islands Guide Book which provides information for tourists to hop around the three islands.

The ticket costs $30 per person in 2003.  To make it worthwhile, you have to at least hop between 2 islands.  Personally, I will recommend you start early and go to Lantau in the morning.  You have to catch a bus to the top of the hill to see the temple and the Buddha statue.  You may have a vegetarian lunch in the temple or vegetarian restaurants nearby.  Then visit Cheung Chau in the afternoon.  In Cheung Chau, no cars are allowed except ambulances and various sizes fire engines.   Shops, temples, beaches and restaurants are in walking distance.  You can walk around, do some shopping and lots of restaurants can be found along the waterfront.

Island Hopping pass can be purchased at the ferry piers or HK Tourist Association service counters.
