What is appropriate the best way, find a dwelling, those for size for individual man? Am I to search to letting outside of the city centre and isthat practical, if you must work city center?
Thanks. I am from Germany. |

Hong Kong is a small place -- but not that small. So it is possible to live so far outside the city center that it is inconvenient to commute to work.
Most expatriates live either on Hong Kong island, so they are near the business districts, or far out in the new territories so they have more room and can afford accommodation more in line with western standards.
As a single man you'll might -- I presume -- be more interesting in being near the nightlife than having a garden etc. Therefore Hong Kong island may be better. There are plenty of places on the south side of the island, nearer to aberdeen or stanley, which puts you about 10-30 minutes commute away from the areas of the financial district ("central hong kong").
For a one bedroom or studio flat you expect to pay $15,000 to $35,000 per month, in HKD of course. It really varies depending on the state of the appartment, is it new or old.
Many westerners end up with older places because they tend to be larger -- particularly with high ceilings -- and local Chinese tend to prefer new buildings. However there is more demand from expatriates for old flats than there old flats so this puts up the price.
Also think of the outlying islands -- they have good ferry services that go straight into Central. Discovery Bay -- an estate on Lantau -- and Lamma Island are the favourite choices. The first is a bit more middle-class-with-family while the second is a bit more casual-young-people or grown-older-hippies ! -- That's me! |

I love the outlying islands. I used to live on Cheung Chau and it was great. It has a small village atmosphere and everywhere is accessible on foot. In fact, there is no car on the island. Beaches are 10 minutes walk away from my home so if you like water sports Cheung Chau is for you.
Now that I move to Mui Wo in Lantau (because my girlfriend lives there) we have more space but the island is much bigger and you either need a car or have to rely on the public transport to get around in the island. |

I used to live in Sai Kung which is a nice "fishing village" type of place with plenty of expats there. It's a pain to get in and out but nice while you are there. Recommended if you are going to drive a car yourself.
Even when I lived there though it was booming with construction of luxury places though so it may be harder to get the the cheap village-house type of things now. I paid $5,000/month for a 700 foot two bedroom village places -- ground floor flat.
By our standards pretty basic but can be comfortable if you do it up right.
