What is United Buddy Bear?

There was this German couple Dr Klaus Herlitz and his wife Eva who were thinking of creating something that represents loving, caring and understanding among people.  In 2002, they thought bears is the best candidate.  They created these full size and mini buddy bears and artists from all over the world designed and painted these bears.

Buddy bears are all hand-in-hand and shoulder-to-shoulder to represent love, peace, understanding and mutual support among people.

In June 2002, the 'Circle of the United Buddy Bears' opened in Germany.  It was a big thing and ambassadors from different countries had attended the opening ceremony.

'The Bears' was in exhibition again in Kitzbuehel in Jan 2004.

Why in Hong Kong?

It dates back to June 2003 when the Hong Kong super star Jackie Chan was filming in Germany.  Jackie heard about these bears and decided to visit Dr Herlitz and their workshop.  Jackie likes the idea very much and so when he went back to Hong Kong he proposed to the Hong Kong government to invite the United Buddy Bears to Hong Kong.

So, if you have time, do go there and have a look.  I think you can even buy a buddy bear to paint it yourself!
